Because of its percussive, rhythmic and melodic qualities, the guitar is central to crafting the perfect groove for any song, in any style. Carl Burnett’s Groove Guitar edition of Take 5 is your fast track to the pocket and groove you’ll want to create for virtually any style you play.
”Curtis Mayfield, Al Mckay, Charles Skip Pitts, Nile Rogers, are just a few examples of great players that originated the ‘groove guitar’ vocabulary that you hear today in contemporary music. In this course, I’ll step you through a ‘groove guitar’ primer where I’ll show you some key techniques, rhythmic approaches, and chordal embellishments. It’s filled with key concepts in playing guitar with the overall conceptual idea of groove and creating music.”
After the primer, Carl will guide you through 5 Groove Guitar performance studies across a variety of musical styles, ranging from basic applications to more sophisticated and challenging approaches.

Level 3: Groove Guitar
”Now we’ll be adding a triplet embellishment. If you haven’t noticed it at this point, check out my body language. A key way to stay in the groove is moving to the beat! This means patting your foot, bobbing your head, or whatever maybe. You can also feel the time in your strumming hand even when not playing. A lot of the “feel” also comes from dynamics and articulation while playing.”
Level 4: Groove Guitar
”There’s a lot to take in here with incorporating all of the previous concepts into one funky groove. This one is reminiscent of Cameo. We’ll break down how we’ve incorporated all of the previous concepts into one funky groove in Level 4.”
Level 5: Groove Guitar
”Finally, we’ll groove at a faster tempo, where we’re really having to lock in subdividing 1/16 notes. More essential listening is Prince!”
Carl will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the key examples and performances.
Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tool to sync the tab and notation to the video and can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.
