In this topic, we share Frame by Frame Handdrawn FX – Direct download links shared!

Due to many users have been asking for this course, we will share this whole course day by day.

Introduction

Congratulations and welcome to the Hand Drawn FX course. You’ve made the right choice, and there is a beautiful adventure in a frame by frame animation. Let’s see what do you need to take with you on that journey, so that you can prepare for the start and reach the final destination and become a real Toon Boom King.

Hey! Welcome to the first lesson!

0. Tools Overview Motion Design School.mp4   (download)
82.31 MB

Frame-by-frame animation is all about understanding the nature of movement and drawing frames. I would say, tools play a secondary role here since you can do amazing shots even on paper.

There are a lot of digital tools for frame-by-frame animation on the market, but let’s get acquainted with the most popular ones, so that you can complete the course with no technical issues. In this course, I will be using Toon Boom Harmony, but you can also work in Adobe Animate and Photoshop which you’ll become familiar with after watching this lesson.

P.S. If you are working in TV Paint, Pro Create 5, Rough Animator, Cacani or whatever, it will work fine too.

1. Drawing Effects

Click here to see Download link and the whole The Lesson content

In this lesson, we will consider the basics of drawing different types of energy.

1. Drawing Effects Motion Design School.mp4   (download)
119.20 MB

Basic tips for drawing effects:

  1. Instinct lines
  2. No parallel lines
  3. No repeats
  4. No symmetry
  5. Fractal structure
  6. Energy movement
  7. Arcs and “Z” depth
  8. Special fx design

Keep this list somewhere nearby and try to stick to it while drawing special effects.

Homework

Choose one element or substance (water, fire, steam, smoke, electricity, etc.) and make 10 sketches of this substance with a different plot and design.

2. Animating Energy (July, 27 – 2020)

Click here to see Download link and the whole The Lesson content

At this lesson, you will learn how to animate energy. We will be considering the thing that is the basis of almost all special effects…it is a wave. That is why the largest part of the lesson will be devoted to wave motion.

2. Animating Energy Motion Design School.mp4   (download)
100.14 MB

Homework

Create an animation loop of wave of three different types: the simple one, complex(more curvaceous and unpredictable shape) and the complex wave which is drawn within 2 lines.

3. Starting Scene and Liquid animation (July, 29 – 2020)

Click here to see Download link and the whole The Lesson content

At this lesson, we will take a look at how the starting scene of the course promo video was created. We will also touch a bit a Rigging process in Toon Boom, and then dive into liquid animations. You will create liquid trails and we will also show you some tricks with dense liquid.

3. Starting Scene and Liquid animation Motion Design School.mp4   (download)
150.59 MB

The Toon Boom file of the first scene is attached below, so you can take a look and investigate any detail you wish.

FX_scene.zip   (download)
294.15 MB

Homework

Create a simple animation of a flying object. Then create and animate 2 differently designed liquid trails for it. That means you need to do 2 videos with the same flying object but with differently designed liquids.

4. Morphing #1 (August, 02 – 2020)

Click here to see Download link and the whole The Lesson content

At this lesson, we will consider such an important thing as morphing. We will recreate the frog transformation into the sloth from the main scene of the course promo video and we will also do a couple more simple but not less interesting practical tasks.

4. Morphing #1 Motion Design School.mp4   (download)
103.38 MB

Here is the morphing scene we are considering. You should already have the source file from the previous lesson. But here it is just in case you don’t have it:

FX_scene.zip   (download)

Practice

Here are 2 tasks for practice. Try to do them by yourself.

But in case you have any difficulties you can download the source file below.

Morphing_lesson4.zip   (download)

Homework

For those who have no rich experience at drawing the task is:

Draw 2 geometric shapes and create an animation of how one shape transforms into another one. But not just by drawing in-betweens, think of a plot of your morphing: the shape can jump, twist, bulge etc.

For those who dealt with the shapes easily:

Draw 2 characters and morph one into another. You can make it in any way, it can morph while making a jump or twist, or maybe it can be some kind of liquid animation, just feel free and show your creativity.

5. Smoke Effects (August, 02 – 2020)

Click here to see Download link and the whole The Lesson content

In this lesson, we will consider the smoke animation. We will talk about different types of smoke, watch some references and practice a lot by animating the extinct candle. Then we will talk about smoke trail animation of the sloth from the course promo video. And as always, you should consolidate the knowledge by doing the interesting homework 😉

5. Smoke Effects PracticeReferences Motion Design School.mp4   (download)
102.14 MB

Practice

We will be creating this Smoke animation. The project file you’ll need for the lesson is attached below.

Smoke_create.zip   (download)

References

Of course, observation is an internal part of studying animation. As it was mentioned before, filming the references is very important. And I’m really glad to share some of mine. Hope they will help you to better understand the nature of the smoke movement the same they helped me.

smoke_reference.zip   (download)

Homework

1) Recreate the candle smoke animation but with your own smoke design.

2) Create a smoke trail for the flying object. Make a gradual disappearance of the smoke.

Smoke_homework.zip   (download)

6. Morphing #2 (August, 13 – 2020)

Click here to see Download link and the whole The Lesson content

In this lesson, we will talk about morphing again but will consider more complicated things. First of all, we will show you how the morphing from sloth into squid was made. Then we will move on to the practice task in which we will show you how to morph one character into another one. Literally, we will show you how to create really easy (in 3-4 frames) but still amazing morphing.

6. Morphing #2 Motion Design School.mp4   (download)
84.30 MB

As always, we attach project file of the course promo: FX_scene.zip (download)

Practice

Let’s create such a simple morphing of one character into another one

Hometask

1. Draw 2 different characters and make the transformation from the first one into second one with quick morphing(3-4 frames). But don’t forget the anticipation before morphing and follow through action to make the character stop after morphing in a natural way.

2. For those who have not so powerful drawing skills – we propose you to use our character considered in the lesson. Just import this image in Toon Boom, redraw then on the new layer and create morphing animation.

7. Bubbles (August, 18 – 2020)

Click here to see Download link and the whole The Lesson content

Today’s lesson’s theme is bubbles animation. At first glance, it doesn’t seem to be very important, but the truth is that on bubbles example we can figure out the air flows behavior underwater and the way objects influence the water behavior itself.

7. Bubbles Motion Design School.mp4   (download)
139.35 MB

Practice

Create the animation of the bubble floating up from the bottom of the screen.

Object fall into the water

The bubbles themselves are the air movement underwater and we consider how falling object influences these air flows on the example of squid animation.

Homework

1) Create the animation of the bubble floats up from the bottom of the screen (quite similar to practice task 1)

2) Animate any object entering the water and of course, supplement it with bubbles.

8. Squid Animation (August, 28 – 2020)

Click here to see Download link and the whole The Lesson content
8. Squid Animation Motion Design School.mp4   (download)
145.66 MB

In this lesson, we will cover not only the squid animation, but will consider the general rules of animating spineless animals. Animation of such characters significantly differs from the “creatures with bones”. Such creatures as squid, octopus or jellyfish move underwater in pretty interesting way, their animation looks more like something from special effects world or something amorphous. We will also create the jellyfish animation from scratch and have a quick overview of the most common mistakes.

Practice

Create animation of this beautiful jellyfish.

Homework

Create the animation of jellyfish but get creative with its movement trajectory.

Make the animation following the same steps: animate the body first, then add other body parts one by one.

9. Lettering (Sep, 10 – 2020)

Click here to see Download link and the whole The Lesson content

In this lesson, we will consider lettering animation. This kind of animation is very popular in motion design, and moreover, used techniques can also be used in logo animations or in creating really interesting morphings and transitions. Of course, we will do it frame-by-frame, no cheating 😉

9. Lettering Motion Design School.mp4   (download)
167.28 MB

Practice

Create a reveal effect of the word “Hi” with the help of flying drops. Project file is attached below if needed.

Lettering.zip   (download)
11.51 MB

Homework

Find or create your own lettering and animate its frame-by-frame liquid reveal.

10. Transition (Sep, 20 – 2020)

Click here to see Download link and the whole The Lesson content

At this lesson, we will be creating such a simple but pretty interesting looking transition. It’s similar to the one you saw in Promo Video of this course. By the way, you can save this transition as a template and use it in any of your future projects 😉 So, let’s get started!

10. Transition Motion Design School.mp4   (download)
132.70 MB

Practice

Here is what we gonna be creating. Project file is also attached.

lesson10.zip   (download)
2.51 MB

Homework

Create your own version of the liquid transition using the same techniques we considered in the lesson.

We will update the rest weekly.
